The Feast That Swallows Death
Isaiah envisions God making a lavish feast on the mountain for all peoples, where the shroud covering the nations is destroyed and death is swallowed up forever. Preach this as the certain end of God’s faithful, long-laid plan. Let the tears God wipes away become a lens for present grief: the church lives now in hope that every loss, shame, and enemy of life will finally be undone. This text invites worship and courage, not escape.
The Shepherd's Table in the Valley
Psalm 23 moves from green pastures to the valley of deep darkness, then to a table set in the presence of enemies. Preach the psalm not as a linear escape from trouble, but as God’s presence through every terrain. The shepherd’s rod and staff protect, while the host’s table restores dignity amid threat. The psalm’s final confidence—goodness and mercy pursuing the speaker—can frame a sermon on how God’s care follows us, even when we cannot see it.
Clothed for the King's Feast
The parable of the wedding banquet turns on two refusals: the invited guests who ignore or harm the king’s servants, and the man who arrives without a wedding garment. Preach this not as a simple warning but as a call to examine how we respond to grace. The feast is free and wide, yet entering requires a changed life—the garment of faithful obedience. The outer darkness is not God’s cruelty but the consequence of refusing the king’s terms.
